Investigating Remorse in Sentencing Remarks

Project Supervisor: Dr Michael Proeve

Remorse is commonly recognised as a mitigating factor in sentencing. However, there have been remarkably few systematic and thorough studies of ways in which remorse is understood, identified and taken into account in sentencing. The project will analyse sentencing remarks from South Australia, drawn from public information on the websites of the South Australian District and Supreme Courts. Systematic qualitative methods of thematic analysis and content analysis will be used to analyse judges’ criteria and understanding of remorse as expressed in sentencing remarks.

Oral Health and Quality of Life in People from the Middle East with Refugee Backgrounds

Project Supervisor: Dr Clemence Due and Dr Matt Dry

This project concerns oral health in refugees from the Middle East, including considering the link between oral health and quality of life. The student would be involved in data collection at community organisations with refugee participants, and both quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
