Each year, to honour and celebrate medical research, innovation and success, The Florey Medical Research Foundation invites a prominent researcher to Adelaide to deliver a public lecture in their field.
- Striving for Excellence in Health CareW/Professor Fiona Wood FRCS, FRACS, AM.
Professor Wood led a team who worked day and night to care for badly burned victims of the Bali bombings in 2002. It was during this time that the "spray-on skin" cell technology Professor Wood pioneered for use in treating burns victims grabbed international headlines. In recognition of her work with the Bali bombing victims, Professor Wood was named a Member of the Order of Australia in 2003 and received the Contribution to Medicine Award from the Australian Medical Association.

held in 2014 - Controlling Cancer Through Immunotherapy : Lessons from Papillomavirus Associated CancersProfessor Ian Frazer AC, FRS, FAA
Papillomavirus infections initiate cancer in humans, and viral proteins continue to be expressed in the cancers. Vaccines to prevent infection with the relevant papillomaviruses prevents development of the cancers in animals and humans. Immunotherapy targeted at papillomavirus proteins can eliminate tumours expressing these viral proteins in several animal models. Despite this, immunotherapy directed at these non-self proteins has proven ineffective in several clinical trials of cancer immunotherapy in man, despite generation of appropriately targeted immune responses. Some of the reasons for this will be discussed.
held in 2013 - It's All About the Bone: Why We Should Care!Professor Larry Suva
"From childhood, through adult life and ageing, your skeleton is constantly adapting to its environment. The maintenance of a healthy skeleton is critical for our overall health, and important for the maintenance of our lifestyle," says Professor Suva, who is Director of the Center for Orthopaedic Research at UAMS College of Medicine.
This lecture will help the audience to better understand the central role of their skeletons in many, if not all, aspects of life. It will also highlight some of the latest research into bone health, and the relationship between bones and common diseases, such as cancer.
